Exhibition in memory of Ex-Rector Volodymyr Slyvka
This year, the former Rector of Uzhhorod National University Volodymyr Slyvka (1943-2004) might be 75 years old. This is the age when one can successfully work, create and do research, but unfortunately, Volodymyr Slyvka has not been with us for 14 years already. Therefore, it was decided to open a thematic exhibition in the Scientific Library of UzhNU acquainting us with the life of the outstanding scientist.
The initiators of the exhibition were the employees of “Karpatyka” department of UzhNU Scientific Library. The exhibits include Volodymyr Slyvka’s publications in magazines, newspapers, books, his scientific works, and photographs. The head of the department, Maria Chorniy, says: "Volodymyr Slyvka was a very modest, intelligent and tolerant person. He often came to see us when he was a Rector, he respected our work, helped us, but never showed it off."
The director of the Scientific Library of UzhNU Maria Medvid says: "Everyone remembers him as a very polite manager who always treated other people with respect, without a hint of supremacy. The opening of this exhibition is, first of all, our memory, a warm human attitude to a prominent person. Maria Chorniy and Natalia Danylets carefully selected the material, photos for the exhibition."
Volodymyr Slyvka was a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, a professor, an Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the High School, twice a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, he was awarded the "Honorary Award of the President of Ukraine" (1995) and the Order “For Merits" of the II class (1998).
In 1993 the teams of Ukrainian higher educational institutions were given the right to elect a Rector. Volodymyr Slyvka became the first Rector elected by the staff of Uzhhorod National University. He was the head of the university for 16 years.
Moreover, Volodymyr Slyvka was also the leader of a large university team of specialists engaged in scientific research in the field of semiconductor physics. He founded the Research Institute of Solid State Physics and Chemistry at Uzhhorod National University and headed a Specialized Academic Board for the Defense of Candidate's Theses. As a scientific supervisor, Volodymyr Slyvka trained 16 candidates and 5 doctors of sciences. Four times in succession, he was elected a member of the Transcarpathian Regional Council.
