The Classical Philology Department dates back to the mid-1940s, the period when Uzhhorod National University was founded. The department was small in its early years. At the beginning of the 1950s, the department employed three foreign language lecturers: V.Sulinchak, Y. Sak and A. Ihnat. The department was headed by V. Sulinchak in 1946 and by A. Ihnat in 1948.

Later on, in 1965, the Classical philologists joined the teaching staff of the Department of French Philology and Classical Languages, which was headed by Associate Professor Y.Sak. In 1976, they joined the Department of General and Slavic Linguistics, headed by Professor P. Chuchka.

According to the University Rector Professor V. Slyvka’s order № 13-01, dated 21 June 1996, the year saw the creation of the Department of Classical and Romanian Philology under the auspices of the Department of General and Slavic Linguistics as well as the French Language and Foreign Literature Department. The department’s mission was seen in promoting Classical Philology and enhancing professional training organization at the Romanian Department.

The experts such as associate professors Y. Sak, A. Ihnat, Y. Bahlai, and M. Oros, and senior lecturers O. Yatsyna, and I. Pahiria gave their best to sciences over 60 years of the department’s existence.

The department is currently headed by Candidate of Philological Sciences Associate Professor Emilia Vasylivna Shved.

The staff members include one assistant professor, Candidate of Sciences in Philology Shved Emilia Vasylivna, six senior lecturers (Yatskiv O.M., Barbil O.V., Dats’o O.H., Dats’o T.O., Shepa N.S., Maryna D.O.), and two senior laboratory assistants (Bukata T.V., Minˈkovych I.M. ). Associate Professor, Candidate of Sciences in Philology, Paramonova S.A. also collaborates with the department.

The main thrust of the department’s research work launched in 1960 is deciphering and translating Mykhaylo Luchkai’s work written in Latin, “Historia Carpato-Ruthenorum,” in six volumes. The staff has successfully accomplished this stupendous scientific project. It took them 40 years to do the job. The Ukrainian translation of the 6^th and final volume of this fundamental work was published as a separate edition in 2011. Many efforts were made by Associate Professors Y.M. Sak, A.M. Ihnat, M.V. Oros, Y.O. Bahlai, E.V. Shved and senior lecturers O.V. Barbil, O.M. Yatskiv to decipher and translate the work.

The Classical philologists of the department have been actively working on the new complex scientific topic “The Neo-Latin Language Dictionary Compilation” (based on the works of M. Luchkai, I. Bazylovych, I.Pasteliy, V. Dovhovych). Now the compiled card index contains more than two thousand entries.

Due to the support of the public organization, “George Coşbuc,” the Romanian language lecturers have established close international ties between Ukraine and Romania within the framework of European Integration. Under this agreement, native Romanian university students, including those studying at the Romanian Department, made a trip to Romania together with the lecturers. The trip aimed at getting acquainted with contemporary Romania and its citizens’ lives after integration into the European Union.

The joint Ukrainian-Romanian eco-tourism promotion project, “Ukraine Without Borders,” was also organized with the assistance of the organization “George Coşbuc” (in the village of Okna Shuhatah, Romania).

The Romanian students participated in the mutual Ukrainian-Romanian program “Pentru Voi” (“For You”), held in the city of Baia-Mare, Romania. The students had the opportunity to complete courses in European Integration – the Ukrainian and Romanian students were taught the Fundamentals of Communication so they could maintain good-neighborliness and write various types of grants.

In October 2013, the students and lecturers of the Romanian Department met with Consul General of Romania Eleonora Moldovan and Counselor Yonel Ivan. The meeting was held at the department. 

By the resolution of the Admissions Committee, the applicants to the Romanian Department shall be admitted by entrance examination results in the Romanian Language during the Entrance Campaign in the higher educational establishment.
