Unique historical materials were presented at the international conference on Carpatho-Ukraine
On March 14-15, 2019, an international scientific conference "Carpatho-Ukraine is an independent state" took place at Uzhhorod National University. A lot of new facts about Carpatho-Ukraine, which need further research, were presented at the conference.
The participants of the conference were welcomed by Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Vise Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration. The conference was also attended by the family members of Volodymyr Blondynenko, an American journalist of Ukrainian origin, who took photos and videos on the territory of Carpatho-Ukraine in 1938-39.
Professor Oleksandr Debych told about the photos taken at the times of Carpatho-Ukraine. In particular, he noted that most of the new photos, he found in the archives of the Ukrainian Museum in Cleveland, have not yet been published. They were taken by a well-known American photographer and director, entrepreneur and philanthropist Kalenyk-Lysyuk during the period of Carpatho-Ukraine and immediately after the Hungarian occupation. Photographer’s son Peter died in 1939 in Khust in the struggle for Carpatho-Ukraine.
An interesting report was presented by the candidate of historical sciences Oleksandr Pahyrya (Lviv). The report was on an armed confrontation between the Czechoslovak troops and the Carpathian Sich soldiers on March 13-14, 1939.
A foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Philology, Professor Mykola Mushynka reported about the President of the Hutsul Republic, the Minister of the Government of Carpatho-Ukraine Stepan Klochuryak. He was personally familiar with Stepan Klochuryak, and was the editor of Klochuryak’s memoirs "To Freedom", which were first published in 1978.
During the first plenary session, Oleksandr Sytnyk, Doctor of Historical Sciences, also spoke on the ideological foundations of Carpatho-Ukraine and Cornell Grad, Professor of Vasile Goldis Western University (Arad, Romania), delivered his report "The Aggravation of the Situation in Subcarpathian Rus in August 1940 and Romania”.
