Department of Zoology
On 1 December 1945 at the faculty of biology of Uzhhorod university a department was formed under a strange, as it might seem today, name – department of zoology and biology or as it was then called “zoobiology”. Its formation was connected to the arrival in Uzhhorod of candidate of biological sciences, associate professor Ivan Herasymovych Rohal. Rector of the university A. M. Kurishka with his order №2 appointed Ivan Herasymovych the head of department that was formed the same day. The name corresponded to the tasks and conditions under which the first faculties were formed as well as to the first body of students. At that time the faculty of botany included only the department of botany and biozoology and had to provide for the delivery of lectures in the course zoology of inverterbrate and general biological disciplines for the students of the first year of the faculty of biology. Moreover, medicine students had to be lectured in “General biology”.
The arrival in Uzhhorod of candidate of biological sciences, associate professor S. F. Segedi and the formation on 15 September 1946 of the department of zoology of inverterbrate at the faculty of biology caused the renaming of the department of zoobiology and change of its educational tasks. The department headed by І. H. Rohal was renamed into the department of biology and provided lecturing only in general biological disciplines for the students of the biological and medical faculties. The main courses included: "General biology”, "Genetics", "Histology", "General biology with zoology, parasitology and Darwinism". In 1947–1948 the following associate professors worked on the per hour basis: N. М. Panafutina and N. М. Krasnopolska. In 1947 І. І. Kapalchyk retired and the following people started working at the department І. D. Sidorenko as a senior laboratory assistant and I. P. Kichkova as a laboratory assistant. In early 1948 the department of biology included five people: head – associate professor І. H. Rohal, assistant H. Z. Varyanytsa, senior laboratory assistant І. P. Kichkova, laboratory assistant І. Е. Sidorenko and an assistant. The department of biology existed for almost three years at the faculty of biology. It started from empty premises and became one of the best equipped in the university. The department had optical equipment, visual aids and equipment for spectral analysis. In September 1948 року department of biology broke up, its property and academic hours were given to the department of zoology of inverterbrate.
The department of zoology was formed in June 1947 when the Minnistry of Education of USSR sent the candidate of biological sciences, associate professor І. І. Kolyushev to Uzhhorod university. Together with the existing department of zoology of inverterbrate the faculty of biology needed one more department of zoological specialization to lecture in zoology of the spinal and other disciplines of this direction. A specialization in zoology of the spinal was planned for students-biologists.
The newly formed department was headed by the experienced theriologist, associate professor І. І. Kolyushev that was the only lecturer at the department until the end of 1947. At this organizational period the following people worked at the department of zoology of the spinal: a senior laboratory assistant А. І. Kovrygin, senior assistant М. V. Mekhovsky and an assistant V. V. Kanina. Only in 1948 the pedagogical staff grew to two lecturers when the wife of Illya Ivanovych, an assistant of the department, a specialist in ichthiology K. K. Vlasova came to the department. She was a graduate and then a lecturer of Tomsk university. In a year one more assistant started working at the department of zoology of the spinal V. О. Lindberg who had been lecturing here for 11 months before she moved to another higher educational establishment.
In September 1956 І. І. Kolyushev became the dean of the faculty of botany and joined the department of zoology of inverterbrate with the department of zoology of the spinal. The newly formed department of zoology was the most numerous at the faculty under his leadership and offered students to major in two specializations: “Zoology of the spinal” and “Zoology of inverterbrate”. Besides the zoologists specializing in the spinal – associate professors І. І. Kolyushev, К. К. Vlasova and assistant І. І. Turyanyn, the staff included specialists in the inverterbrate – associate professors К. К. Fasulati, А. А. Hirits, senior lecturers А. Т. Tveritina, H. М. Roshko, assistant І. М. Lykovych. In early 1960s the department was enriched by graduates-zoologists from Uzhhorod state university І. І. Bokotey, О. R. Dovhaany, Yu. І. Krochka.
In 1967 due to the early death of the organizer, inspirer and head of department, the real founder of Uzhhorod zoological school professor І. І. Kolyushev, associate professor A. A. Hirits, well-known for his administrative work, was apppointed for the post. After defending the candidate thesis Yu. I. Krochka became assistant professor, К. К. Vlasova and V. І. Ponomarchuk retired, О. R. Dovhan died and in early 1970s the department staff was enriched by a younger generation. Promising graduates of the faculty of botany of Uzhhorod state university I. H. Dobosh, О. V. Korchynskyi and М. І. Shcherban started the complicated and responsible lecturing work with creative inspiration. They gained experience working side by side with senior colleagues, developed in the scientific sphere, soon defended their candidate theses and became associate professors. The technical assistance was provided by senior laboratory assistant Е. І. Dudko, laboratory assistant V. І. Yevdokimova and assistant О. І. Huley.
In 1973 A. A. Hirits took a research leave to finish his doctor’s dissertation and candidate of biological sciences, associate professor І. М. Lykovych was appointed head of department and he worked there till 1978. During this period A. A. Hirits successfully defended his doctor’s thesis in 1974 but died in a year. A young dipterologist, a disciple of Andriy Andriyovych, S. I. Farynets was appointed a lecturer at the department.
Since 1978 the department of zoology was headed by doctor of biological sciences, professor І. І. Тuryanyn, the first disciple of І. І. Kolyushev, who defended his doctor’s thesis. In 1984 the post of the head of department went to candidate of biological sciences, associate professor I. H. Dobosh, who worked there till 1989. The second half of 1970s till 1980s in the history of the department of zoology was characterized by relative stability and harmony of development of both academic directions – zoology of inverterbrate і zoology of the spinal. Associate professor М. І. Shcherban left the department due to retirement and his place was occupied by ornitologist, candidate of biological sciences, disciple of the department А. А. Hvozdak who underwent good scientific training at the Institute of zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republics. From 1989 to 1995 the department was headed by candidate of biological sciences, associate professor О. V. Korchynskyi – follower and disciple of І. І. Коlyushev and І. І. Тuryanyn, a specialist in theriology. A supporter of ballanced policy of leadership, he maintained both zoological directions at the department. After retirement of the zoologist І. М. Lykovych the department was enriched by an employee of the zoological museum of Uzhhorod state university, acarologist Т. Т. Dudynskyi.
In early 1995 the department was headed by a disciple of І. І. Коlyushev, doctor of biological sciences, professor Yu. І. Krochko. A worthy follower of Kolyushev traditions of university classicism Yuliy Ivanovych ran the department till 2000 till the end of his service contract as head of the department. A natural process of staff turnover leads to the appearance of new faces. I. H. Dobosh, І. І. Тuryanyn and А. А. Hvozdak left the department, but young zoologists arrived with less life and scientific experience, but willing to work at the department at least as well as their teachers.
At the turn of the millennium the department of zoology was enriched by its former graduates: candidate of biological sciences, associate professor N. V. Kuruts (Starosta), a young ornithologist, assistant L. А. Potish, hydrobilogists with record of scientific work at academic institutes of Kyiv: candidate of biological sciences N. Ye. Kovalchuk and doctor of biological sciences А. А. Kovalchuk. In 2002 a former graduate, a candidate of biological sciences specializing in the sphere of plant protection V. V. Symochko joined the pedagogical staff of the department. In 2001 a postgraduate, part-time laboratory assistant F. F. Kurtyak joined the staff of the department; in 2004 he became a candidate of biological sciences. At the beginning of 2003 the most experienced at that time zoologist, doctor of biological sciences, professor Yu. І. Krochko, who had worked all his life at the faculty and at the department of zoology, retired. From 2000 to 2005 the department was headed by candidate of biological sciences, associate professor S. І. Farynets – zoologist-enthomologist both in profession and calling.
From 2005 the department was headed by candidate of biological sciences, associate professor Т. Т. Dudynskyi majoring in acarology.
In 2005 associate professor L. А. Potish, an ornithologist transferred his course “General ecology” to the department of entomology and maintaining biological variety of the faculty of biology and then to the department of forestry of the faculty of geography that he has been heading since July 2011.
In 2006 associate professor V. V. Symochko, a graduate of the department of zoology, who mainly investigates the development of organisms harmful for agriculture and methods to reduce their harm for agricultural ecological systems moved to the department of growing fruit, vegetables and vine of the faculty of biology and then was appointed its head.
In September 2006 a graduate of the department A. T. Dudynska joined the department of zoology, then she defended her candidate thesis under the title "Synathropic acaridian mites (Acariformes, Acaridia) of Transcarpathia".
In 2008 L. V. Krulko joined the department. In 2010 she defended her candidate thesis under the supervision of associate professor F. F. Kurtyak specializing in “ecology” under the title “Amphibians of natural reserve ecological systems of South-West megaslopes of the Eastern Carpathians”. After that she moved to the department of entomology and maintaining biological variety.
