The Department of Software System operates from September 1, 1996, when the first students began classes on informatics. At first, the name of the department was the Department of Physic-Mathematics Disciplines. Since September 1, 2005 it was called The Department of Software System and Physic-Mathematics Disciplines, since it become a department on new specialty "Software Engineering" of educational qualification  levels of  Bachelor, Specialist and Master. After reorganization of the faculty in 2011, it was renamed as the Department of Software System.

Throughout its existence the position of the head of the department was hold by:

• Buledza Andriy Vasylyovych - Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences , assistant professor, professor of the department (1.09.1996 – 31.12.1998);
• Laver Oleksandr Heorhiyovych  - Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences , assistant professor, professor of the department (1.01.1999 – 7.01.2009);
• Vashchuk Fedir Hryhoriyovych - Doctor of Engineering Science , professor  (8.01.2009 – 28.02.2014);
• Holovach Yozhef  Ihnatsevych - Doctor of Engineering Science , professor (01.09.2014)
